The second-largest city in the American Southeast, Charlotte, NC is a fast-growing town that offers excellent opportunities to start a business. The Charlotte metropolitan area hosts a wide variety of notable companies across many industries, especially finance, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Of course, opening a business requires you to do more than just hang out a shingle in front of a storefront. There are a number of licenses that you need to obtain in order to operate a business concern in North Carolina. These licenses include what is commonly known as a seller’s permit, which enables you to legally collect sales and use tax on retail transactions.

Most U.S. states require businesses to carry a license of this nature. It is also known as a wholesale license, resale license, sales tax permit, sales and use tax permit, and reseller permit. In Charlotte, as well as the rest of North Carolina, it is officially called a Certificate of Registration.

Getting your Charlotte seller’s permit is easy—all you need to do is take a few minutes to fill out the online application we have set up here at FastFilings.

Who Needs a Charlotte Seller's Permit?

Seller's Permit vs. Resale Certificate in NC

Here is a topic that confuses a lot of people. Despite their similarity of names, a seller’s permit in North Carolina is not the same as a North Carolina resale certificate. Getting a resale certificate in Charlotte gives your business the right to purchase goods on a tax-free basis so long as these items are to be resold later. It does not have the same purpose as your North Carolina wholesale license/Certificate of Registration, which must be ordered separately.

In North Carolina, this document is formally known as a Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement Certificate of Exemption (Form E-595E). It is filled out by the purchaser and given to the seller at the time of the initial sale. You must have a valid Certificate of Registration in order to use Form E-595E.
