About Our Business Filing Services

The state of Arizona is known for its desert climate and a highly diversified economy that provides ample employment opportunities in the trade, transportation, education, manufacturing, and financial sectors. If you plan to do business here, there are certainly a lot of opportunities to make money. However, you need to comply with state rules and regulations that pertain to business operations. That includes obtaining what is commonly called a seller’s permit.

A seller’s permit is a type of business license used by many states that grants the right to collect sales tax. It also goes by a number of other names: wholesale license, sales tax permit, sales and use tax permit, resale license, and reseller permit. In Arizona, though, things are a little different.

Arizona doesn’t really have a sales tax. They have what is called a transaction privilege tax (TPT). Unusually, this tax is imposed on the seller, not the buyer. Businesses here technically don’t use an “Arizona seller’s permit” or an “Arizona wholesale license”—they have a TPT license. This license has basically the same legal standing that a seller’s permit in Arizona would have.

To conduct business in Arizona, you will likely be required to obtain a TPT license. The easiest way to do that is right here at FastFilings. We have set up an online ordering system that allows you to apply for a license in literally a matter of minutes.

Do You Really Need a Wholesale License in Arizona?

If you sell tangible goods in Arizona, you probably need one of these licenses. This applies to businesses physically located in Arizona as well as out-of-state businesses that sell to residents. Remote sellers and marketplace facilitators are required to have a TPT license if their sales exceed a certain threshold.

State law on this point is complicated, so you’re advised to check out the relevant section of the Arizona Department of Revenue website to learn more.

Seller’s Permit Vs. Resale Certificate in AZ

The difference between a resale certificate and a sales tax license is another topic that often causes confusion. A resale certificate in Arizona is what gives a business the right to buy goods tax-free if these items are to be resold later. This certificate is given by the purchaser to the seller.

An Arizona resale certificate should not be confused with a TPT license. They have very different purposes.
